First of all, this book has been praised non-stop this year. Everywhere we looked, we saw this book and its very telling cover. So, we had to read it...of course.
Sally Rooney manages to capture the different ways love can blossom between the same two people throughout their lives. Be it love between two friends or more than friends, it's clear from the very beginning that out two protagonists have something special.
The story is basically what transpires between Marianne and Conell, two people from a small town in Ireland, and who come from different backgrounds and families. One would think that nothing could throw them together in any way whatsoever, but, then again, life is funny like that.
What caught our eye from all of this (and will probably catch yours too) is the way it's been written. It's as if we are being told the story; there are no dialogue lines or punctuation marks, just retellings of what one character said or the other. It seems fluid but, at the same time, it takes some getting used too (you don't see this way of writing often).
Anyways, this story will definately hit home for pretty much everyone. It covers love, friendship, coming of age, life changes, mental health issues, violence....everything. So, if you're ready, then grab a copy and get reading!
Antes que nada, a este libro le han tirado flores por todos lados este año. Donde sea que miráramos, ahi estaba el libro y su tapa, cuya imagen ya decÃa bastante. Obviamente, lo tuvimos que leer.
Sally Rooney logra plasmar las diferentes formas en las que surge el amor entre las mismas dos personas a lo largo del tiempo. Sea amor entre dos amigos o más que amigos, está claro desde el principio que nuestros protagonistas comparten algo especial.
La historia básicamente es sobre lo que ocurre entre Marianne y Conell, dos jóvenes de un pequeño pueblo de Irlanda, que llevan distintas formas de vida y vienen de diferentes familias. Uno pensarÃa que nada los podrÃa unir, pero la vida tiene sus formas.
Lo que sà nos llamó la atención (y a ustedes seguro también) es la forma en la que la autora narra la historia. La forma en que está escrita es como si nos la estuvieran narrando; ni hay lineas de diálogo ni su respectiva puntuación que los marque. Es como si nos estuvieran relatando lo que dijo uno y el otro. Parece una narración fluida pero, al mismo tiempo, puede llevar un poco de tiempo acostumbrarse (uno no ve esta forma de escribir tan seguido).
Habiendo dicho esto, la historia seguro va a resonar con casi todo el mundo. Cubre todo tipo de temáticas: amor, amistad, crecer, cambios en la vida, salud mental, violencia...todo. Si están listos, busquen una copia del libro y a leer!
