The plot of this book catches your interest right away. Set in Amsterdam in the 1600s, Petronella Oortman, a young 18-year-old woman, gets married to Johannes Brandt a wealthy merchant. He, of course, is much older than her and, like most marriages at the time, it was arranged for the economic stability it brought. Now, this new husband of hers gifts her a cabinet replica of her new home and she decides to hire the services of a miniaturist to give it some life. I won´t reveal more, but mysteries and hidden secrets start to surface and things get...interesting.
If you have or haven´t read this book, I do have a suggestion: pay close attention to the opening. It´s not a prologue, it´s just one of those small openings/chapers that authors sometimes write before the real story unfolds. When I started the book, I read it, and specific details got lost in my mind as I kept on reading the book. But once I finished, I decided to go back to it and it was the smartest decision ever. It leaves you surprised and it gives a little closure in a way. I just loved how the author played with that opening, so that you go back to it in the end, making sense of some parts.
If you are one of those people that like period pieces, movies or shows, and you find mysteries and drama thrilling, then sit down and grab this book. Just do it. Seriously.
La sinopsis de este libro enseguida te atrapa. Situada en Ámsterdam en los 1600, Petronella Oortman, una joven de 18 años, se casa con Johannes Brandt, un comerciante rico. Él le lleva varios años pero, como la mayoría de los casamientos de la época, fue arreglado por la estabilidad económica que traía. Este flamante esposo le regala a ella una réplica de la casa en la que viven, a la cual ella decide darle vida por medio del pedido de miniaturas. No les develaré mucho mas, pero los misterios y secretos ocultos empiezan a surgir, y digamos que las cosas se ponen...interesantes.
Hayan o no leído este libro, sí hay algo que quiero sugerir: presten mucha atención al apartado del comienzo. No es exactamente un prólogo, sino que es uno de esos segmentos o mini capítulos que los autores a veces incluyen antes de que la verdadera historia comience. Cuando comencé el libro, leí esa parte y detalles específicos se fueron perdiendo en mi mente a medida que continuaba mi lectura. Una vez que terminé, decidí volver a ese comienzo y fue una decisión muy inteligente. Te deja sorprendido y te da cierto nivel de cierre. Disfruté mucho como la autora jugó con esa apertura y como uno vuelve ahí, dándole un poco de sentido a ciertas partes.
Si son de esas personas que disfrutan historias, películas, o series de época y los misterios o dramas les parecen emocionantes, entonces tomen asiento y lean este libro. Háganlo. Enserio.
